I decided to give FeedBurner a try. I sometimes have to recreate a feed because WordPress can have a problem with some feeds. However feeds that are imported into DabbleDB and then exported again seem to have better success in WordPress. There is a lot of excitement about FeedBurner and they were recently purchased by Google.

I did create a feed, however it was not accepted by WordPress. However, I created a derivative feed off of the same feed in DabbleDB and I got it to work in WordPress. For me, DabbleDB will be my feed generator. I suppose if you are interested in syndicating your feeds, FeedBurner is the place. Also FeedBurner allows you to advertize with feeds (would love to know how this practically compares to Google’s Adwords “Content Network” which is broadly considered to be a waste of money.) However, for simply reforming feeds to be accepted by picky receiving systems – like WordPress, presently FeedBurner does not appear competitive. However, where FeedBurner does add value is in syndicating your website feed. Here you can see we just setup several blog feeds in FeedBurner..

This is supposed to increase the visibility of your sites as many search bots look to FeedBurner as an aggregated area on the web to pickup content. We will let you know how it works in a later post.

If anyone has any comments on FeedBurner and why it is so great (or not so great), I would love to hear them.

We have been looking for a way to display RSS feeds in WordPress blogs. We have displayed RSS feeds in the WordPress widget for some time. However, we wanted to display the RSS feed right in the post. It turns out there is a plug in to do this called WP O Matic. We will wait to install it until WP 2.7 comes out which will allow the installation of plug ins from the control panel.

Member
Registered: 2008-11-26
Multiple Categories
I am not quite getting how sharing fields among Multiple Categories works.

According to DabbleDB help, the following allows for sharing one field between two categories.

“Apply multiple category filters- If any of the entries in your view are in Multiple categories, you will have the option to add additional category filters. (The option will appear below the existing filters.) This will restrict the view to entries belonging only to both or all of the categories.”

I have two categories in my Application – Symmetrical Content..

1. Car Color (Color, Car)
2. Paint Number (Color, Paint Number)

Color is a field that is identical in both categories and has identical data (Blue and Red). However, when I go to create a filter, I do not get the option to add additional category filters. That is, it does not seem to be “reaching out” to the other category with the same field. So I can only make a filter within one category.

If you would like you can check my categories, you can look at any of my tables under my Symmetrical Content application that you need to, and make any changes to Car Color and Paint Number categories. They are just test categories.
Offline

#2 2008-11-29 12:22:38
panmanphil
Member
Registered: 2008-11-28
Re: Multiple Categories
Your problem is very similar to the one I just posted about asking for Union type functionality. If I’m reading this correctly you want a filter that gives you all Car colors and Paint numbers with the same color, say Blue. In database terminology that would a join of the two sets.

From what I’ve been learning here, you would instead have a paint number category and a car category and the car would contain a link to entry matching the color. Now your car category could filter on a specific color, or return all cars with their color and paint number. The latter you would do with a derived field from the paint number category. Make sense?
Offline

#3 2008-11-29 12:49:39
ultra.snapp
Member
Registered: 2008-11-26
Re: Multiple Categories
Thanks for your reply.

I was with you, until you mentioned the derived field. However, to have a derived field, you need to link the two fields in different categories. My understanding was that fields that are shared among multiple categories are not linked, they are actually the same field.

If you will notice the bottom of this URL http://www.dabbledb.com/help/forum/view … hp?id=3044

I do not get the “Ad filter” drop down. I think I need that to share fields across categories. I don’t get this drop down even though I have identical field names and values in two different categories in the same application.
Offline

#4 2008-11-29 14:17:09
redtexture
Member
From: USA
Registered: 2007-10-01
Re: Multiple Categories
Just in case you did not see this, “Link to entry” is the one-to-one relation for linked categories.

You must explicitly configure a field to make the link.
http://dabbledb.com/help/index/link_to_entry

You create the link to entry by configuring an appropriate field that is able to uniquely pick another record. Typically some kind of ID that would be the same for both different categories.

Do take care when you do convert your field type.
It is easy to lose your data into an unintended transformation.
Undo is your friend.

Once you have a working link, you can, “derive” a field, by clicking on the linking field, to display a copy of the field from the “other” category.
Last edited by redtexture (Yesterday 14:13:26)
– Redtexture — just another DabbleDB user
Offline

#5 Yesterday 16:46:56
ultra.snapp
Member
Registered: 2008-11-26
Re: Multiple Categories
Yes I have seen that help page.

However, I am not creating a relation between two fields. I am attempting to actually leverage the ability of a DabbleDB field to “belong” to two different categories. I don’t understand it actually, but I have setup what I thought were the necessary conditions in two tables allow DabbleDB to reach out and provide multi category filtering as an option. I have not seen that option come up.
Offline

#6 Today 10:13:35
Luke
Administrator
From: Toronto
Registered: 2007-07-02
Re: Multiple Categories
Hi there,

A specific *field* can only belong to one category. What multiple categories offers is the ability to have an *entry* in more than one category. The entry will then have fields from each of the categories. So I think the problem here is that it doesn’t work the way you thought.

That said, given the data and categories that you have, I think what you want *is* actually a relation between the categories. If you change the Color field in one category to be a Link to Entry to the other category, and make sure you tell it to match to the corresponding Color field, Dabble will create the appropriate link and allow you to “derive”, e.g., the paint number from the Car Color category.

One of the issues we are having with DabbleDB is when we try to perform multiple filters on all the categories in the application at once. Now we can do this with a single category as you can see below.

However, the way to add a filter across categories is by using the “search all” button. However, when we do this, we are only given the option of selecting one filter it seems.

Above you can see the single search term applied to three different categories. However, attempting to sort within the original sort does not seem possible.

Here we have a view of both of our categories in one application, unfiltered. They way you get this is by entering “nothing” in the search all box and then hitting enter.

However, since the categories have different records, it does not list all the columns, but rather summarizes them. Now we can enter a filter, but this filter is run on the summary.

As you can see we get one result. However, if we use the search all box we get a different result.

This is the result from the actual category entry. It only found one entry because the fields are linked. We have a duplicate application saved which has the same fields, but does not have a link between the fields in question. Notice how different the results look for the same filter or red.

When you first begin working with DabbleDB, one gets the impression that each application is separate. However, you can add any category from any application to any other application. This is done in the category review.

Simply add the category to the right and it will be added as a “virtual table” to the application you are within.

As soon as you do this, the category appears in the menu.

Now the table is essentially shared across applications.

In this video, which describes the Science Commons Scolar’s Copyright Project.

(the video is located here) http://sciencecommons.org/projects/publishing/

We quote.

“…modern technologies give us a way to go forward….this is the type of sentence you see in the life sciences. Its very complex and its very detailed.

What you will notice is that it does not have links….here is what happens if you add links to it.

What you see is it would be very powerful if we could add links. it would be good to link to other papers, or even better to link to the underlying databases. Unfortunately the copyright software makes it illegal to do this.

…are we going watch literature like TV, passively, human readable, or whether we are going to do something meaningful with the literature. Whether we are going to index it in some way, take it out of the paper containers and all computers to help us answer questions.” – Science Commons

Our Interpretation

This brings up an excellent point about how being able to manipulate data allows original thinking and analysis to take place, rather than simply having all the analysis distilled for us by “experts.” Having raw data in simple formats like CSV actually available is one of the areas that needs improvement as too much data is locked up, even public record data. Secondly, the analytical tools need to be there. Tools like DabbleDB, which allow for the importation of CSV files as well as the active receipt of RSS feeds are an important part of this capability. Excel is great for analysis, however, it is not integrated with the web, and is not sufficiently automated. (Furthermore, keeping tabular data in Excel format is a dead end, lets not confuse the data with the temporary technology.) We need automated data management systems (both personal, government and corporate) that can apply computer power not just in storing, organizing and formating, but also in automated receiving, querying and distributing raw data.

You can either display a table in a page, create a form to allow users to enter data, or data or both. However, to simplify lets just differentiate between showing tabular data in a page and showing a form.

Creating a Form

In order to create a form you must first select “Pages” underneath sharing.

Next you want to navigate to the right.

Then you need to select a page to create a form from. Select the category you want to form to be based upon.

Now you can go and create your form.

Both Tabular and Form

In order to show tabular data you don’t have to do anything special. However, to show a form to allow the user to add or make changes to data, you must select this checkbox in configuration.

Pages are the GUI which represents the data in DabbleDB categories. One page can direct to another page after it has been viewed or actioned by the user. The configuration for this is here.

In this way, one page can lead to the next, essentiall creating an application workflow.

Navigation

However, in addition to a specified workflow, navigation options can be added to any page. This means that a series of options can be listed to the right in a menu. This is configured here.

This is the output, it will show all pages that are created for that application, unless otherwise limited.

This workflow combined with this navigation and multi-pages could really create an mini application. We will be further investigating these features.
